Ok, so here is the deal, it is a bit hard to explain, I have never had this problem before and now I am having it all the time I don’t know what I did wrong. I am editing on a MacPro 2×3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 9GB of RAM Mac OSX 10.6.7 in FCP 7.0.3 on a HD that has over 150GB Free space. Ok…
Sometimes when I press play on the timeline I get this weird noise that scares the $%^%$ out of me, its playing fine and all of the sudden NOISSSEEEE (Scary) now sometimes also show an error message: One or more frames where dropped during playback – If this occur frequently, try:
    – Turning Off “Unlimited RT” ( Which I did but doesn’t help, I never had to do that before)
    – Lowering compression data rate (Don’t know how to do that)
    – Closing open sequences ( It’s the only open sequence)
    – Lowering the preferences for real-time audio tracks (Tried lowering it to 2,4,6 and still…)
    – Increasing the speed of you system and/or disk drives (System? really do you think I need?… Drive I never had that problem before with the exact same drive, and its not happening only with that drive)

Please I am going crazy I need some help here.
    Thanks.

And you are playing back what type of footage, h.264, HDV, etc (codec + sequence settings)? Bottom line, your hard drive is not keeping up. HD’s are cheap. Back up the current drive and replace it with a larger one. 150 GB is not a lot of space.

Look into a RAID for better performance in FCP.

    Hey Steve,
I am working mainly with AppleProRes (LT) but it also happened when I was working with regular NTSC DV footage. I have had the problems with all my HD they are all 1TB and up and some are connected with FW 400 and other with FW 800, I am not so sure that the problem is the actual drive, maybe there is something I am missing in the FCP settings that might have caused the problem. Thanks.

ProRes LT should have flawless playback. Are you daisy chaining your drives? That will cause a bottleneck. If you have an open PCIe slot, add a FW800 card. Make sure your Playback settings are Unlimited RT and Dynamic.
