  • FCP 7 “share” DVD burn time.. what am I doing wrong??

Posted by Graham Dickinson on May 17, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Im burning a 30 minute run time DVD in FCP with a TC window burn and using the “share” feature to burn the DVD.. it says its going to take more than 2.5 hours to complete. This seems terribly slow for such a high end editing system. Are there settings I need to change or anything I should be doing differently to speed this up??

    (It’s all HD from a Sony Z1U)

Native HDV… ugly for render/compression times.

How long is the sequence? If it’s native HDV or any other GOP structured media, render/ compression times take much much longer than say ProRes or other all “i” frame media.

    Partially, true…

I have found that this feature is nothing more than a marketing gimmick. It sounds nice and looks nice but it’s extremely slow. On a 30 minute program, pretty much any compression, you’re looking at least 2 1/2 hours just to compress and write. Last time I tried it with a ProRes422 timeline, the estimator said it was going to take 9 hours to compress, and this was after about 20 minutes of compressing.

Your much better off using Compressor or DVD Studio Pro for this.

The sequence is all HDV 1080/60. Sounds like I just better get used to the lengthy burn time with that share feature. Thanks to you both, very helpful!
