  • FCP 7 Sequence Aspect Ratio Conflict Question

Posted by Robert Salter on October 19, 2009 at 1:47 pm

I apologize in advance if I’m using to incorrect terminology.

I’ve upgraded to FCP 7 and my questions concerns aspect ratio. I’ve just finished two sequences which are ready for export. When I first started capturing video from my Sony DCR-HC-30. I did notice a warning that came up, something to do with a conflict between the imported video and FCP settings – I selected to have FCP modify the preset to match and imported the video.

My sequence summary is: 720 X 480 frame size, 29.97 fps, pixel aspect ration is NTSC-CCIR601/DV. Under my Sequence setting menu, the sequence is identified as NTSC 720 X 480 NTSC DV (3:2).

My “easy setup” shows the Seq. and Capture preset as DV NTSC 48Khz and the device control as DVCPRO HD Firewire.

All I want is a standard NTSC format to view on a standard NTSC TV, shouldn’t the aspect ratio be 4:3?

NTSC uses rectangular pixels instead of the square pixels used on computers. so it turns out that 720×480 (rectangular tv pixels) equals 640×480 (square computer pixels.)

Always stay in 720×480 when dealing with ntsc dv video. If you want to output for playback on computer ONLY, resize to 640×480 (otherwise it may look stretched) – but then wont be optimized for tv either.

hope that helps, but by looking at your settings you should be good to go for export (especially if you accepted the resize and fit pop up in FCP.)

[Robert Salter] ” and the device control as DVCPRO HD Firewire. “
Open the Audio/Video Preferences and change “Device Control: NTSC FW”.

I am receiving videos at 1920×1080
I will need to deliver them (for web use) in either 720×480 or 640×480 (these were the given choices)

I am going to be creating, then adding graphics to the top and bottom of the new videos to make use of the “letter-boxing” which will occur when I drop the original videos into their new sizes.

    so
    if this is the case…
when I create the graphics (in Photoshop and/or After Effects) should I create them at 640×480 or 720×480?

I don’t want to risk having the graphics “squished” if I create them at 720×480 instead of 640×480.
And I don’t want to waste potential space by creating them at 640×480 instead of 720×480.

    please advise.

    Hello,
I am working on a project that is DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, 29.97 fps, 720 x 480, Pixel aspect is NTSC-CCIR 601. I am trying to do two things with my prokect, one is to create a DVD for one to watch on the TV. The second is I am trying to create videos that I want to upload to youtube. I am having some issues with exporting for youtube which I am doing using compressor. The issue is that I am left with black bars on both sides of the video. When I add the tag yt:stretch=16:9 the bars go away but it looks like the top of my video is cut off as the persons head in the video shows from the nose down. If someone could please help me out with the issue I am having when exporting to youtube and also to make sure that I am usubg the correct settings for exporting to DVD for TV. Also is there anyway to make the Frame size bigger or do I just stay with the source that I have.
    Thanks,
    Brad

Take your master to Compressor and export as 720×404 Squared pixels,
    de-interlace it as well.

Compressor has a good Re-size filter. You need to set the “Frame Control: ON”.

Thank you for getting back to me. I have a sequence in FCP right now and I sent it to Compressor but how do I change the size from 720 x 480 to 720 x 404?
    Thanks

I exported it from FCP to 720 x 404 and just uploaded it to Youtube without using compressor. Do you recommend using compressor or is the way I am doing it okay?
Thanks for all of your help!

If you got it right from FC, no need to use Compressor.

Thank you for your help once again. I am having a issue with the 720 x 404 video as it looks streched or something. For example there is a person in the video dancing, so in the new 720 x 404 he looks fatter. It is like those carnival mirrors that make you look short and fat is the best way I can describe it. Is there a way to have the video on youtube without black bars look the same as the video (720 x 480) with the black bars on the side?
    I really appreciate your help!
    Thank you,
    Brad
