FCP 7 dumps your prefs
I just installed FSC3 and when I open FCP 7 all my prefs are gone. I have always done a clean install, is this normal?

That is absolutely very common. Preferences from one version of an app are often very different from a newer version, and they might possibly cause conflicts as well. So, rather than have a whole load of people complaining that FCP is broken right out of the box, prefs are always overwritten when upgrading. Yet another reason for making a clone before doing any updates or upgrades.
