FCP 7 and Closed Caption Support
Posted by Mark Maness on July 30, 2009 at 4:11 pmHey all,
We haven’t made the plunge just yet… Still in the middle of lots of projects. BUT, that doesn’t mean I can’t do my homework on FCS3.
My question is… The closed captioning support… Does this only accept caption files that are quicktime wrapped or can it accept most caption file formats. We don’t use MacCaption but we do use the current copy of CPC CaptionMaker software with an SD Link Electronics PCE-845 encoder/decoder (this is same software manufacturer).
Will FCP7 accept the CaptionMaker files?

So, how would this work? Do you import the file thru the Kona Control Panel?

July 30, 2009 at 6:38 pmHello Wayne and John,
.SCC files can be used in the new FCP for standard definition captioning such as for DV and DVD.To caption material for DTV broadcast (HD or SD), you need to use the EIA-708 caption standard. However .SCC files do not include 708 caption data (only 608, the old analog standard).
MacCaption can import an .SCC file (or any other kind of caption file, or your raw script from a text file) and convert the captions into the 708 format so that you can print to HD or SD tape from your AJA Kona 3, Matrox MXO2, or Blackmagic Decklink cards. The workflow is slightly different depending on which card you use.
This page talks about AJA and the new FCP: https://cpcweb.com/hdtv/aja.htm
Also see: Matrox MXO2, Blackmagic Decklink
Your CaptionMaker software can be upgraded to the latest version of MacCaption to gain this capability. Please see our website or contact us for more details.
Hope this helps!

July 30, 2009 at 6:50 pmThanks for responding, Jason.
Can’t I do this with the current version of CaptionMaker software? It claims it does HD. Am I missing something?

July 30, 2009 at 6:51 pmYou select the file in Edit to Tape or Print to Tape, if that’s what you’re looking for.

July 30, 2009 at 9:24 pmHi Wayne, it depends on what version of CaptionMaker you have. I suggest you give CPC a call or e-mail me privately for more information.
Thanks!

July 31, 2009 at 3:22 pmClosed Captioning is a FCC requirement so pretty much all of them.

August 12, 2009 at 7:56 pmIs it possible with the new version of final cut or compressor to embed closed captions into a file format that can be given to stations? We have some stations asking for a file rather than tape, and we would love to do it but we want to make sure our captions would be on the file and play from the file. We want to upgrade but won’t until we can find out for sure if this is possible. Please advices. Thanks.

August 12, 2009 at 9:32 pmUh….
You have to have a closed caption file to do this, and you can save it into any format using CPC-700 or higher versions.
