  • FCP 6.04 not recognising Canon XH-A1 HDV….

Posted by Cameron Weaver on September 26, 2008 at 3:32 am

    Hello,

Here is the problem. I have a Canon XH-A1 and haven’t tried to capture anything for a few months. I have just tried to capture some HDV and Final Cut 6.04 is not recognizing the XHA1 HDV signal. After some tedious trouble shooting (easy set up, camera setup, FCP settings, etc) I found nothing would work with the XH-A1’s signal. I did switch the cam to down-rez SD. When i did an easy setup in FCP it worked fine in establishing communication with the DV firewire stream. Now for the cherry on top , I open Imovie and the HDV is recognized, Imovie recognizes “XH-A! (HDV)”. PLease help. I would just downgrade to FCP 6.0 again but all my projects would not be able to be opened.

    Thanks for any Help.

Have you tried the usual things – trashing preferences & repairing permissions?

    Cameron,

The A1 is persnickety, it requires you do the following. Turn on the camera in vcr mode, WITHOUT the FW connected. In the first menu, set the playback standard to HDV, it defaults to Auto. Then, plug in the FireWire, launch FCP use whatever easy setup you want, doesn’t matter, open FCP’s audio/video settings and select HDV FireWire for device control and either HDV or HDV to ProRes for your format.

Launch the capture tool, you will get a different one depending on your selected format. Go nuts.

I have a tutorial on ProRes capture you may find helpful.

    Have a wonderful day.

Got it. I did re-install FCP. Ran software uodate. Then started a new project following your instructions.

    Top Notch! A+!

    Cheers!

    OH NOOO!

Now that I got my camera to be recognized by the system… I am trying to capture and there are no quicktime media files being created. I first got this problem when I tried to do a “Capture Now” I let a whole reel go down and when tape ended I noticed there was no media. There was a link to another post that interested me and may be similar to the problem I am having. I am experiencing the same thing but I have a Canon XH-A1, not a Sony, I am trying to capture using HDV 1080 24F.

    Thanks Again
