FCP 6 – ProRes422HQ clamping whites
Never realized this was happening on other projects.
EX1 footage on the time line – render to prores422hq and the hot whites are clamped and killing detail.
Ran a filter to bring down the whites to 100% and its still happening. Tried some other codecs in FCP and
also doing it.ANy help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Using Quicktime conversion – prores422hq – 1920×1080 interlaced , upper.
Need the quicktime file since is one that Vegas for Mpeg rendering for DVD will take.
Tried other codecs and they are all doing it.Export movie where there are no options to choose from does not do this.
I also have FCP7 on another machine and will try things there tomorrow.Ed

That’s the cause. Quicktime CONVERSION will clamp your highlights. That’s actually a trick I used to make sure shows met Broadcast Safe specs…Use Quicktime CONVERSION.
If you don’t want that….then make the timeline settings ProRes HQ…put the EX footage on that timeline, render it, and then export QUICKTIME MOVIE, using sequence settings, no recompression. Any time you use CONVERSION, no matter the codec, things are clamped.

Thanks for the response. Very helpful. Since I need 422 prores it looks like I can
“create quicktime movie” and get my prores as long as I have Prores 422 in the compressor field in sequence settings….. I am hoping. Doing a render over night now.Ed

Also remember to enable “Super White” in the Video Processing tab in the Sequence settings pull down menu. If it’s set to “White” it will clip the highlights as well.
