I am trying to import a batch of P2 quicktime files that were already captured via log and transfer from the original MXF files off of a P2 Store. I moved the files to a new subfolder inside the capture scratch to organize my files better. When I reconnected the media, not all of the files reconnected and it was simply behaving wierdly, so I cleared everything out to start fresh since I had no edits yet. When I import the P2 quicktimes, it says 81 files recognized, 28 unknown and it only pulls in 33 of the files. I know some of you will suggest moving the files back to their original folders, but does anyone have any other ideas?

No, I have nothing backed up.

Also, I have a few P2 clips within Final Cut that won’t open in the viewer. It’s just black and when I press play it says “General Error”.

FCP 6 and P2 is a disaster. Thanks a lot Apple.

FYI, all 81 files play back fine within Quicktime and the Finder.

Cancel that. The files play back in preview from Finder, but they will not open in quicktime. Also, some of the bad files open occasionally. And they open on other systems sometimes. Just throwing it out there, don’t expect there to be any fixes. Thanks Apple.

sounds like this is more of a file corruption issue. As a practice I also keep the raw P2 files on a drive. Without that it is like capturing a tape and then throwing out the tape when done.

Check to make sure that you have more than enough space on your scratch drive.

yup- I cannot recommend highly enough keeping backups of each P2 card whether it’s coming from a Store or a P2 card. Once you process through FCP the MXF data and the original structure are gone. Sorry you had to learn the hard way.

I’ve imported somewhere around 500 GB or so of P2 material into FCP 6 running on an Intel and a PowerPC system and have had zero issues. So, I don’t think P2 import is borked for everyone.

I agree with the previous posts: Always always always make a complete backup of your P2 media as it existed on the card for situations just like this. I know it doesn’t help much now but it might save you some headaches in the future.

[Matt Riley] “I’ve imported somewhere around 500 GB or so of P2 material”

The only issue I have seen is that my buddy tried to import a 4GB clip with only 6GB of free space on his scratch drive, and he also got the black clip syndrome. Once he freed up disk space and reimported, it was all good.
