FCP 6 Open Timeline Setting?
Posted by Thomas on July 10, 2007 at 10:03 pmIs there a setting somewhere in FCP 6 for open timeline.
I’m editing DVCProHD and whenever I drag in MiniDV footage in the timeline, there’s no pop-up window that asks me if I want to continue.
The MiniDV footage just has a green line for rendering and the ration expands to my 16:9 HD ratio. Shouldn’t the MiniDV footage be in a smaller box to stay as 4:3?

July 10, 2007 at 10:07 pmNormally, yes. But FCP is making it bigger to match the footage you are currently editing. This is one of the features of the OPEN TIMELINE. Don’t you want it to do this?

July 10, 2007 at 10:29 pmThe pop-up will only occur if there is no video in the timeline – and the clip doesn’t match the timeline settings. Once you place the first clip in the timeline, FCP assumes you know that you are now mixing formats and never asks again.

July 11, 2007 at 2:12 amAlso the first time you run FCP after the 6.0 install it will ask you what you default timeline will be if you set it to anything other than none you will not have the open timeline.
If you did this, just treash the pref and launc FCP again and it will ask this again, choose none and you’ll be set.

Where did you find this information?
I think it’s totally wrong.
The sequence settings can become the format of the first clip dropped into it,
no matter what the default setting may be.
You are asked the first time you drop a clip into a new sequence if it doesn’t match. -

July 12, 2007 at 11:13 amI had the same problem.
I installe 6 and FCP was not accepting any format I laid in the time line, without having to render it.
I asked one of the apple rep and the FCS2 tour that was in Miami last week and he said that I must have choosen a default setting for my timeline when I installed FCP, which I had.
eh said to trash the pref and when I open FC set my default timeline to none and it will now be open format.
I did that on my system at home and it worked.
That’s were I got that information from, first hand experience.
Where did you get your information that it’s “totally wrong”?

After trashing prefs and starting up FCP 6.0.1, I am asked to set my
scratch disk, choose a Format, Frame Rate, and Setup.
There isn’t a “none” choice. The timeline in FCP 6 is open format by default.
(there’s no option to turn it off)The first time you drop a clip into an empty timeline and the clip
doesn’t match the current sequence settings a window pops open
with the following:“For best performance your sequence and External Video should be set
to the format of the clips you are editing.Change sequence settings to match the clip settings?”
If you choose “Yes” then the sequence settings are matched to your clip.
From then on all clips added to the timeline will conform to the
new sequence properties. From the New Features in Final Cut Pro 6 PDF:

I think the choice of None was under Fromat.
It’s been a couple of weeks since I did it.All I can say is that I did what I told you and it worked for me.
Prior to trashing the pref’s and doing this I was never asked
“For best performance your sequence and External Video should be set
to the format of the clips you are editing.Change sequence settings to match the clip settings?”
After I did I saw that message for the first time.

Steve, there are no “none” choices under any of the drop down menus.
What you may be remebering is that if you chose a format for which
a capture device isn’t connected you will get a window with the following:
(I made an arbitrary choice to make sure I saw this message) -

July 13, 2007 at 2:41 pmI appologize, my wording was wrong.
I just trashed my prefs to see for sure/
It does not say “none”, under format it say all formats and under rate it says all rates.
From what I was told and what worked with me if these two items are set to anything else the the timeline is not open format.
Meaning it will accept any format, but it will need to be rendered to play.Again; I’m sorry for the mis-wording.
