  • FCP 6-Exporting DV- 16×9/ DV ntsc 3:2 issues

Im editing a DV project that was shot on a dv video camera using the 16×9 function on the camera.
My sequence settings are: Frame size = 720×480 ntsc DV (3:2) , Pixel aspect Ratio= Ntsc-ccir601DV with the anamorphic 16:9 box checked. When the box is checked it makes the image in the canvas look as it should. My problem is the export. I’ve export QT movie self contained at current settings. When i open the export file in QTplayerPro the image is stretched (up & down) and is not the same as it was in the canvas window in fcp. Then i tried exporting, changing from current settings to DV ntsc 48khz anamorphic. got the same results. Then i tried exporting, changing from current settings to Dv ntsc 48 khz (not anamorphic), and again the same results. How can i resolve this , Im assuming i have chosen a wrong settings somewhere. The only thing i can think of is, Im not sure when i captured from the DV camera ( Canon GL 2 ) if the capture setting was at DV ntsc 48 khz, or at DV ntsc 48 khz ANAMORPHIC.
    What am I doing wrong?

    thanks

The material is anamorphic. That’s what you’re seeing in the QT player. It’s up to the playback application to interpret it. You can do this by changing the presentation settings or the aspect ration in the QT player. But it depends on why you’re exporting and where you’re trying to get to. If you’re going to After Effects for instance, you don’t have to do anything. Just tell AE to interpret it as anamorphic.

    All the best,

I’ll be importing the QT movie to compressor 3 for mpeg2 conversion for DVD studio pro 4.
so are you saying that if i leave the file as it is compressor and DVD Studio pro will except it as it is and interpret it correctly?

You take the exported file into Compressor and set it’s aspect ratio in the geometry panel of the MPEG-2 setting that you use. You also have to tell DVDSP that the material is anamorphic and set the disc however you want the material to be treated on playback, either letterboxed or center cut.

You should read up on handling anamorphic material in the manuals for these applications.

    All the best,
