Hello… perhaps someone has some insight for my issues as I’m completely baffled here.
A few days ago I was editing a project in 6.0.4 just fine, no issues whatsoever. I fired up FCP today to finish the video and the first thing I notice is that I have no audio, not even levels bouncing around in the meter. Weird. Then it starts just freaking out and I cannot play back video without dropped frames. This has never happened before. I try to scrub through the timeline and viewer and get no audio, OR (now it gets weird) maybe I get intermittent audio. One clip will play fine, the next will be silent (even though I can see the audio waveforms). The next clip will play at like 10% of original volume and the next clip will be at 100% of volume. This time it will play left channel, then only right channel, then silent with no meters, then full blast…
Argh. I’m running everything off an external Firewire 800, same as usual for me. I double-checked audio/playback settings, I reduced playback settings, etc. I tried copying everything to a new project and got no difference. Just completely crazy freakout random audio.
    Any ideas or experienced opinions?

How full is your system drive? If it’s too full, you could have problems.

Hmm… it is getting full, down to about 6 gigs left on the system drive (MBP). I’ll clean it out and try again. The video clips play with no problem whatsoever from Quicktime so it appears to be strictly an FCP issue.

I have a problem almost the same, except Im getting audio on the scrubbing, but not when playing back from the timeline. I have no issues with space, yet cant get a clean playback. Any insight as to what this may be??

PS: I have tons of hard drive space (250GB+) so it’s not that!

Yep, same basic problem for me. FCP 6.0.5, Mac Pro. HDV project.

Intermittently, the audio meters show no activity during playback. It will suddenly work then quickly stop. When playback does work, it plays back in various screwy ways (slowed down, too loud, etc.)

This happens with any audio file I try to play.

Tried trashing prefs, changing the A/V settings, restarting, new project file, even repaired disk permissions (my superstitious default when all else fails).

    This is making me crazy.

I have exactly the same problem at the moment.

Audio problems began on HDV clips.
Now no audio at all on all media formats from within FCP. No levels – dropping frames constantly.

Hard drive is firewire 800 – 600GB space left.
Trashed preferences. Checked all audio output settings & audio master window. No success.
All raw media plays fine in QT – it’s exclusively a Final Cut issue.

    Working in Final Cut 6.0.6

Did anyone manage to resolve this issue?

Hello everyone i have also been hit with this problem. I just purchased a new mac pro and space and speed is no longer the issue. I have had this problem on two separate machines as well. having talked to apple and following through with their advice witch ended in a Complete reinstall of my OS X and final cut studio7. Once again the problem returns. after reading all post in this thread i feel it may be the HDV movie files as i too have been using this codec. I’am now going to convert all my HDV files and try the apple pro rez or a DVCpro HD 1080i60 compression.
I will report back with my findings as i know their is not much support on this issues.

the file format i have been editing with is:
    Apple HDV 1080i60, 1440 x 1080 (1888 x 1062), Millions
16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz
witch was recorded with a firestore FS-C

anyone with further insight into this problem please share

If you notice Jim, the thread you’ve joined is now quite ancient, so I’d hazard a guess that your problem, though it seems like the same problem, is most likely a entirely different kettle of fish.

I would have to guess that either you’ve installed a plugin that has upset the FCP apple cart, or the issue has something to do with your files from your Firestore. Do you have any way to test with a standard HDV file that recorded without Firestore?

BTW, I was so sorry to hear about to hear about Tammy Faye. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Same problem is happening to me right now! The project was working fine, and now any video or audio I touch, the playback freaks out. One time I hit play, the volume goes up, next it goes down, next it doesn’t play at all…please help!
