As far as I can tell, there is no improvement to the text generators. But now you can drop a Motion project into FCP6 and update the text as needed through multiple iterations. I use Motion most of the time anyway for titles, and this will save the need for multiple Motion project files. Just one Motion file as a template, and mod the text in FCP.

[walter biscardi] “You should never use this tool except for place holders. Use Title3D for text within FCP, that’s a solid text tool. I don’t think Apple will ever update the Text Tool because Title 3D is already there.”

That’s not always true. I do a ton of EPKs that require lots and lots of slates. Opening up Title3D for every one of them is much too time consuming. The text tool is fine, but it would be really nice if I could use more than one font size in the thing.

I use Livetype – it’s an incredibly powerful tool, shame it’s not fully integrated but once you’ve imported your captions then its easy enough to do roundtrip updates and it’s very reliable.

My clients love what it does!

Agree – LiveType works fine – you can import clip into livetype to line up type effects…or rough it out bring into FCP – if it’s not right go back to Live Type – fix it – automatically updates in FCP

    Text tool bags.

Boris provides a clean quality, non moving basic text tool. Motiona and livetype were brought in to do the job.

The AVID text tool is a smidge better than Boris, but NLE’s and text tool shave always been a nightmare. Any critical typography for video needs to be handled with a vector based tool.

AE does a fine job, but it’s not an NLE. You can change the text size with the plain old text tool, it’s in the controls.

Live Type is great, until you want to put titles over an audio file. If I want to “write” titles based on the audio track I have to put markers on FCP, then export the video file when all I want to do is to write the lirics according to the song

    Just a thought

Actually there is a keystroke for kerning characters individually, it’s the same as Photoshop – click the text cursor where you want to kern and use the option key and the arrow left and right keys. But I agree that FCP needs a WYSIWYG text generator. It’s a real pain to position stuff with the 3D Title Tool.

I know I am going to get killled for this but I actaully would rather place text on the screen using the numberical approach. It’s the designer in me.

I have yet to see a perfect titler in an NLE. they all pretty much stink and you need third party to do anything not basic.

Even Avid’s titler opens a whole other interface and has it’s fair share of problems. (do you really want to move text in an AVID with their DVE package?

Personally, the one tool I wish I could have is the AVID plug-in Marquee for generating extruded 3d text… Wish wish wish.

I agree LT is pretty useful and cool, except for a couple of things. First, there’s 3 ultra cheesy effects for every good one, and second, multi-layer projects are useless for roundtripping. When you have multiple titles in one project you have to turn each layer on in turn and render the damn thing. By the time you’re done you might as well use Title 3D and some kind of transition and the motion tab. You are all right, titling in FCP and probably every nle just sucks.

Never brought home more to me than this week, as I’ve been in retail hell, Automatic Duck is sounding pretty good right now, but I guess I’ll give Motion a better chance…
