FCP 6 and BiCoastal Post Workflow
Hello. I hope this post is accepted, as I know there a certain rules against cross posting. I am a DP and CML is my home so to speak, but it was suggested to me that I redirect this question here or lafcpug.org. Thanks for your understanding! Below is the original post that I am submitting on behalf of my editor:
BEGIN. We have 5 people who are all working in different areas of the country working on post for a film. All parties have the same media files organized in the same folder hierarchy on our drives. But when we exchange FCP (v6) project files, we still have to re-link all the media, as the project files point to the sender’s hard drive and don’t recognize the media on the other end. This is becoming especially tedious since we’re far enough along that we have color correction and filters that constantly need not only to be relinked but re-rendered every time we make even the slightest change to the timeline and pass along the file to the other members of the post team. END.
____So that’s that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and many many thanks in advance!

would this literally mean what it says and should this problem no longer exist once the most recent FCP project file is uploaded onto our ftp and downloaded by all parties involved? when dave (editor) gets this message sunday am on the east coast, i don’t know if he will laugh or cry!

Rafael’s suggestion is a simple one and should work, though FCP still might want to re-link the files since there will be changes to the media each time.

I did this with a producer of mine. The same name hard drive is sound advice….same name and file structure.
Renders will have to be re-rendered though. Those are specific to each system.

I live beside the jungle and quite faraway from those workflows;-)
I think the only thing that FC needs is that the files have exactly the same path. If the files are in HDs with different names can’t never have the same path.

Shane’s right… name the hard drive EXACTLY the same for all systems and your relinking should be limited just to the renders.
We’ve used this workflow for years with editors in different time zones and it works.
As to the the renders… you must re render locally.

If you can’t rename the hard drives to the same name, you could send XML around, and for each different system create a script (applescript, PERL, whatever) that performs a global search replace across the XML for the drive names.
You could also do this in a text edit program with search and replace, if you got the context exactly right.
But that is a lot of trouble.
