    Hi

Been using fcp since the start mostly without trouble. However I’m now running fcp 5.0.2 on a G52X2ghz, 4gb of ram and OSX 10.4.2. I have also done all apples updates that are available as of today. Throughout a days work, capturing and editing FCP freezes and we get the beachball of death. It actually freezes the system so hard we can’t make it force quit. Hard restarts are the only way to get out of this. We repeatedly replace the prefs and run systemchecks, with cocktail and the diskutility. That seems to help momentarily. I can also add that before installing both the system and softwarepackage we clearde the entire disk and reformatted it to get a clean start. The problem also existed befor doing Apples propackege update and system update. Anyone have any input?

    /Chris

What are you using as a scratch disk?

I’m cuurently using the internal disk. However the problem has appeared even with external disks. I should also mention I have a SONY DSR11 connected to the front fw-port

Don’t think this is a software problem… more likely hardware… and the big suspect would be RAM chips – to check them, run with only a pair at a time, and see if the behavior shows up when a certain pair is installed i.e. narrow down the possibly bad chips that way… You don’t have any virus checking software installed? If so turn off any checking of files that may be going on in the background… or uninstall it all together. Turn off any limiting of file size that may be on too in the scratch disk settings.

I have no virus progs or anything of the like installed. Also the system worked fine before with panther and fcp 4.5 and therefore it would seem unlikely to be a RAM issue – unless they for some mysterious reason got damaged… I wouldnt mind going back if It wasn’t for HDV wich we are currently working with. Also a while ago I disconnected every other FW-disk we have, even the ones connected to the fw800port before but were not turned on. Only the dsr11 is connected and active and for the past hours it has not crashed… The strange thing is that when the crashes where more frequent it didn’t affect writing large media files to disk – it could be just saving the project file, or moving between programs or finder etc.

    thanks for looking into this

Could be Tiger and your FW drives don’t like each other or something… dunno. But can say, I’m running a system with 3 FW 400, and 1 FW 800 drives connected with a DSR-11 and it all works fine. Can capture to any drive including a SCSI array and a fibre channel array at any time… no crashes etc… have been working with this setup since 10.4.2 was introduced an haven’t had crash since. So doesn’t really sound like a bug, but something else. I suppose the install went bad, or the RAM is flaking out, or one of the drives is not quite right etc… there’s so many variables…

Post more about the system… whose drives, how are they formatted? have you run disk utilities on them? If you exhaust each variable one at a time, things narrow down to the fix…
