  • FCP 5.1.2 upgrade = loose renders

Posted by Jedword on October 3, 2006 at 3:05 pm

Having a major problem since I upgraded to 5.1.2. Every time I double click a clip in the timeline (or make any change to the timeline) ALL renders in the sequence become un-linked to their files. And there’s no re-linking, or undoing, to get them back. I HAVE to re-render.

I’m editing an animated show which is entirely composed of photoshop docs (backgrounds) and QT movies (characters), so EVERY SHOT in the sequence had to be rendered.

Mac (on OS 10.4.7) is a Dual 2 Ghz G5 with 4 gigs of SDRAM and a Blackmagic Decklink Pro Card running SDI to a broadcast monitor. Storage is an XRaid via fibre channel. This loosing of renders occurs no matter what codec used. I’ve tried creating new projects and new sequences. I’ve trashed preference.

This bug has virtually stopped production is 2 edit suties. Help!

Under User Preferences / Editing / Always Reconnect Externally Modified Files… Is that checked?

Secondly, it sounds as if something has corrupted your render files. I know this sounds like a lot of time, but have you gone into Render Manager and deleted your render files and then re-rendered everything?

Should that be checked? I just upgraded to 5.1.2 and am concerned about whether I jumped the gun on it.

    Place a check beside it!

checked the “Always Reconnect Externally Modified Files”. But that did not fix the problem. I’m not modifying any files externally. It’s like FCP looses the connection to all the rendered files in the timeline (old and newly rendered ones) every time I make a change in the timeline.

Any other suggestions? Anyone else having this problem?

    Ok….

You’ve stumped me! But I am curious as to where you are putting your Scratch Disk. Is it on the same drive as your media? Or is it in a different location?

All the media for the project (95% of which is photoshops and QT movies) is stored on an 1.3 TB XRaid. And that’s my scratch disc for renders. The weird thing is that a different edit suite, using a 500 gig firewire drive for storage, is having the exact problem. As a test, I changed the scratch disc. Same result.

My latest thought: maybe it’s because I’m working on a Power PC, not an INTEL mac. I’m gonna do a test on an INTEL laptop later today.

Hmmm…never had a problem with loose renders. Mine are always tight, baby. TIGHT.

Looks like all your clips are pointing to the same media. What you may want to do is select all the clips, then control click on one of them and choose “Make Sequence Clips Independent”. Try that.

It’s all about workflow and your source media in cases like this.
