  • FCP 5.1.2 and Timecode Issues

I know this topic has been addressed many times but I going to keep complaining about this until someone at Apple finally takes notice of this HUGE issue.

I have a project that was shot entire in HDV. I use my Kona 3 to capture my footage to DVCProHD so that I can eliminate all of the problems with HDV. My project is a 29.97 drop frame project. There is NO 24 p involved in this. I have already captured one full tape and most of a second tape using drop frame. My machine control is firewire and I have selected “Firewire NTSC” as my machine control, not “Firewire NTSC NDF”. So I know that the firewire connection is totally capable of drop frame timecode.

Today, I started up my system to continue my batch capture process of the last eight clips on my tape. I selected my offline clips to batch capture, the dialog windows come up like the usual, BUT when I clicked “ok” to start the process, I get an error message telling that I can’t mix non-drop frame timecode clips with a drop frame project. I haven’t changed a single thing in my project other than shutting down and starting up my machine the next day and continuing my batch capture.

Listen to me carefully… I haven’t changed a thing in any clips. I just went to batch capture them.

This only happens every once in a while and trashing the prefs does not correct the problem. My only solution so far is to delete the clips and re-log them and then and only then can I capture them without the timecodes being screwed up.

Oh yeah…. when this happens and I go ahead and batch capture ( I also end up with twice as many clips to capture), My timecodes on every single clip are reset to 00:00:00:00. I loose my timecodes!

Now…. there is no way that you can say that I have miscoded my clips and that maybe I have accideantally tried to caputre with the wrong Easy Setup. NOTHING has changed in any way other than shutting down my system and contuning the next day. I have already sent feedback to Apple every single time this happens but so far we haven’t seen any results of any correction of thsi issue.

I don’t have any advice or a fix for you, what I have is another aknowledgement that his is happening and needs to be addressed. I’m not going to NAB this year, but often, asking the question in front of a few thousand customers motivated them to actually do something. I’m not going this year, but have a few questions myself.
I don’t like the idea of doing that, but sometimes it’s the only way to get them to recognize how serious a problem is. It may seem small … until they realize that this is what we do for a living. To date, I haven’t met anyone I didn’t like on a personal level, however I have had to force their feet to the fire to get problems solved.
    All my best.

ps, I now only transfer hdv to dvcpro hd through the pana 1200a deck. After last night, I’m giving up on HDV as an edit format. It simply doesn’t work.

I agree with you completely. Sometimes it does take an eye opener in front of lots of users to open the eyes of a company. I did this with Media100 years ago and our issues were corrected in about 2 months.

Amen, Brother! Another one has seen the light!

I have too, and it has to do with firewire captures. i was able to solve it by going and changing the capture device back and forth from dv to dv NDF. It’s definitely a bug.

People say that FCP is now ‘smarter’ in how it interprets the tc, but to me it’s ‘busted’.

    I will second that one!

It ALWAYS occurs with firewire machine control with any machine attached.
