  • FCP 5.1 won’t recognize firewire NTSC playback

Posted by Jonny Filsinger on June 22, 2006 at 8:12 pm

We just updated to Tiger 10.4.6 and Final Cut Studio 5.1 and are having problems with video playback. We have tried 2 different Media Converters (one a sony DVMC-DA2, and the other a Pinnacle MovieBox). Both are firewire and worked with Final Cut Studio 5.0. We have tried it on multiple computers (Macbook Pro and 2.5 ghz Dual Powermac) and aren’t having any luck. We’re haven’t switched our primary computer to tiger/fcp 5.1 yet because we can’t fix this problem. We’re skeptical in switching on our primary because we are afraid it won’t recognize our AJA and which would prevent us from outputing to any of our decks. Any Suggestions?

    Check this list:

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.

    Shane’s Stock Answer #8:

A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv

Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.

Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video

Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV

If for some reason you can’t view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:

    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.

    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.

    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.

    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.

    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices

    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed

If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

    OR…is it a Quicktime 7 upgrade issue:
#30 – Deck recognition after Tiger Upgrade:

    Shane’s Stock Answer #30:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1063600&#1063600

The credit for this goes to Bob Sidebotham:

I was just walked through a repair procedure by an Apple Care person, and it fixed my camera recognition problems (I have a Canon XL1 and sometime after installing Tiger, then 10.4.1, various patches (including Quicktime 7.1) and the latest Desktop Video patch, I’ve been unable to use the camera with Final Cut Express, and attempts to capture would result in a FCE crash).

The workaround is to download Quicktime *manually*, after removing the “receipts” which indicate that it is loaded. Specifically, I was told to do the following:

    1. Navigate to Library -> Receipts on your main drive (not from your personal folder).

    2. Remove all files of the form QuickTime*.pkg, where “*” is a version number. E.g. QuickTime600.pkg, QuickTime650.pkg, Quicktime700.pkg and QuickTime701.pkg. This simply tells your system that those packages are not installed.

    3. Go to https://www.apple.com/quicktime/downloads and click on the “download Quicktime” link. DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE UTILITY. Download QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg. Double click this file (probably on your desktop) and then invoke the installer by double clicking QuickTime701.pkg.

    4. After your computer reboots, you should be able to restart FCP and see your camera.
