  • FCP 5 settings for 30f HDV — have read everything I can find!

    Hi,

I’ve spent all afternoon skimming forum after forum and have decided it’s time to beg for help. I’m the proud owner of a new Canon XH-A1. There are several postings on capturing 24f, but not 30f. I have FCP 5.0.4.

The canon manual says 30f records progressive and outputs signals converted into 60fps interlaced. This is somewhat confusing to me. (Is it just copying frames for interlacing?) But it would seem then that the following settings are applicable:

    Capture: HDV 1080i 60, 29.97 (NTSC)
Sequence: 1440 * 1080 (both aspect and pixels)
    Compressor: HDV 1080i 60

Can someone please confirm these are the best settings so I don’t have to recapture if and when I upgrade to FCP 6 (too expensive at the moment). For example, does FCP 6 or 5.1.4 have a setting for HDV 1080 30p (or f)?

I’ve read all about nesting and transferring the finished cut to 8 bit or ProRes for final graphics. It’s just the capturing that I need to figure out now.

    Thanks for your help!

When working with 1080p30 material (such as DVCProHD1080 off of the HPX-500) The camera actually shoots at 30p and when you digitize the material thru log and transfer it automatically does a pulldown to 23.98psf.

In final cut 5 you might have to capture @ i59.94 and do the pull back yourself with the “remove advance pulldown” utility under the tools menu (i believe that was included with FCP5, it’s been awhile since i was on a setup like that.)

    Hope that helps!

Thanks Thom. But can someone else weigh in on this?

Why does FCP 6 have settings for HDV 1080 p24 and p25, but not p30 (other than in Compressor – where I’ll probably use ProRes down the line when finished editing)?

Is HDV 1080i60 really the way for me to go (NTSC 29.97) without compromising quality or future of project?

When authored to DVD, will it still be progressive 30, or interlaced 60? (Does this even matter if I’m achieving a 30p look?!)

    Thanks again!

    Adam
