Couple questions for any tech gurus:

    1) what is that phantom Writing Video that happens when you edit to tape? I have it set to “Playback Settings” for ETT, every effect is either rendered or labeled light green as “Full” quality, and when I ETT it does this 40 minute render….. so a 2 hour show becomes a 3 hour layoff. what’s going on? If i switch it to Unlimited RT, nothing apparently changes in the timeline, it doesn’t do the phantom Writing Video but it always drops frames on ETT.

    2) What is going on with Best quality render and Text 3d? Some of my titles have strange noise blips all around them. They go away on “Fast” render, but then a lot of other items in my timeline look like crap. Both in 10 bit and 8 bit timelines.

    3) Also if I have a Text 3d over video, and they both have a cross dissolve out, but at different rates, the video starts to dissolve and then pops back to 100% and starts its dissolve over again.

I solved all these problems in the wee hours this morning by copy/pasting little sections into new sequences. Some things I took out into Shake and rendered out as media. But when it’s crunch time, these little problems are really making me nervous.

thanks for any ideas or things I should try different.

[CharlieX] “every effect is either rendered or labeled light green as “Full””

Even though it’s marked as full, it’s an rt effect. What you need to do is go up to the sequence menu in both the ‘render selection’ and ‘render all’ submenus and make sure the the full option has a check mark by it. That way you will be rendering everything all the while as you edit and you won’t have to wait for 40 minutes as your two hour sequence renders when it’s time to lay off. FCP is rendering your full rt effects before the layoff to ensure that you don’t drop frames when you select ETT. Render it all until you get the light bluish line. Put your cursor on the line and it’ll say ‘rendered’

As far as the Text3D best quality problems, I’m not sure. I do most of my text in Motion as I get better results, but then I have to deal with RGB to YUV stuff (6 of one half dozen of the other). There seems to be mixed results as to what is best in terms of the render settings. I haven’t figured this one out yet myself.

I don’t know about the Text3D render problems either. Between problem #2 and problem #3, it seems the common denominator is text 3d. Maybe it’s time to look for another cg method.

yeah, i was afraid of that. it’s time to up the raid to another couple hours of storage. we had a 16×9 widescreen filter over the ENTIRE thing, so already it was a monster.

I know I should get away from Text 3d. I just got so used to it, and it worked fine in FCP 4.5, that’s it’s hard to let it go.

    thanks for the reply!

[CharlieX] “2) What is going on with Best quality render and Text 3d? Some of my titles have strange noise blips all around them. They go away on “Fast” render, but then a lot of other items in my timeline look like crap. Both in 10 bit and 8 bit timelines.”

Not seeing anything like this here running FCP 5.0.2 / Tiger 10.4.2. I’m cutting DVCPro HD and 8bit NTSC Uncompressed and I use Title 3D as my main character generator. I always set to Best here. You always have to ensure that your text is on an even scan line for NTSC. So your Center setting in the Motion tab should have an even number as the second number. Such as 13, 12.

[CharlieX] “3) Also if I have a Text 3d over video, and they both have a cross dissolve out, but at different rates, the video starts to dissolve and then pops back to 100% and starts its dissolve over again.”

Are you sure your dissolves are laid in correctly in the video track? Never seen anything like that happen here. What happens in the video track transition has nothing to do with the text transition.
