    HEY guys

I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY MACBOOK AND RUNNING MY FCP 5 for a long while without any massive problems and now have playback problems.

Its been running fine until now so here is the problem:

So I am working on my timeline, i go to render after which i want to view my render and upon playback the picture staggers, stop-pause-hang-start and no smooth playback. I have tried reloading projects, restarting projects, viewing older previous projects and now they too have problems (it runs smoothly if it is jpeg import still image), turning Unlimited to safe, reducing playback quality, restarting program, It has been working fine until now. It is really frustrating as only after I have exported the file can I view my edit as a smooth video. Its almost as if the processor on my macbook has gone and cannot keep up with FCP Playback, I hope not. This is not a frame rate problem or flickering it is frustrating stop start.
    PLEASE HELP HALFWAY THROUGH EDIT!!!!

This could also be a problem with your hard drive, is it almost full, are rendered files going to your external HD or your internal?

I think its going to my internal hard drive, I have always been to scared to moving files to my external drive, so i only move the final rendered movie in codec and the fcp project over. As I say I have never gone into a cache and moved files or looked at any other rendered files, How do move them?

It’s easy to move files around… you can always re-associate them. It sounds like Michael may be on to something… how much space is on your internal HD? I would transfer some old project footage to an external HD… you only have to move the capture scratch if you want. When you open that project with the moved footage, it will ask you to re-associate the video files. It can search and even do it for you automatically, assuming that you gave your files unique filenames. I have done it many times with no problems. I hope your processor is not messed up, cause that is no fun! Do you have the Apple Care?

    so guys,

do i go to my cache, MacHD and select all files related tp FCP – create a folder on External hard drive and through them on there, then get TechTools and clean up the HD?

    Your thoughts

no… just go to the scratch folder for whatever project you are going to move… if you dont know what the scratch folder is, open the project with footage that you want to move and hit (shift+Q) this will open the window that you select your scratch folder in. If you have never changed this, it’s probably set to your Documents folder in Final Cut Pro Documents. (that is the default) If you have changed it for that project, you will be able to see where the folder is that contains your video and audio scratch files. Go to that folder on your hardrive and find the folders relating to that project under the “Capture Scratch” foler and select and move them to your external HD. My recommendation is to always set a NEW folder for each project that you work on so that ALL the scratch files for each project are in ONE folder that can be easily backed up or moved. This will save you time having to sort through the files. Hope this helps,
    Seth

If you have a project that you are no longer working on, you can use the media manager to create a duplicate of the files that you used in the project and back them up so that you can discard all the footage that is taking up hardrive space. This can be found under File/Media Manager. Be sure to select which sequence you want to backup before selecting the feature.
