FCP 5 > FCP 6 — Comparable alternative to editing with ProRes codec?
Hi all:
Running into a situation where a coworker in another state will be putting together a rough cut of a project that I will finish. That coworker uses FCP 5, and I use FCP 6. All the files are animation/computer based, no fields. My usual workflow is to convert everything to 720×480 ProRes codec (I “capture” footage on a PC using FRAPS software) and use that to edit and archive with. I edit with rectangular pixels because past experimenting has shown me that FCP can be wonky with square pixels, and an occasional output to DVD is not uncommon, though mostly everything gets delivered as 640×480 quicktimes for web/computer.
Unfortunately, since said coworker doesn’t have FCP 6, they do not have access to the ProRes codec. Question is, what would be a good, relatively uncompressed but not crazy-drive or processor intensive codec that the coworker can edit with and I can continue with if they are not able to upgrade to FCP 6 and use ProRes? While I have a RAID and a computer that can handle higher data rate stuff, the rough cut editor is a little more limited in their resources.
Those that are NOT editing with ProRes – what hi-qual codec do you use to edit and archive your QT’s with? Again, sequence will be set at standard def 720×480, no fields, ultimate output will be 640×480 computer files and DVD.
