Greetings…I’m new to the Forum and NEW to Final Cut Pro. We just received 2 FCP 5 G4 units…My non-linear background is with Premiere/PC unit. We’ve had a tutorial workshop training, but it lacked several “everyday” applications…

I’ve been tinkering with the laptop, referring to “my notes” and capturing a music track from a CD is giving me problems. When I insert the CD and open the FCP project Browser File>Import I can import a desired track and get get it saved…at least I thought it is saved. When I exit FCP and re-launch the project later the CD clip appears with a red slash through its icon. It has been rendered unuseable? Am I missing a step or two? I’m trying not to bring my PC non-linear knowledge to the Apple but there has to be a shortcut to recording CD music that doesn’t involve SoundTrack Pro. I hope this isn’t a confusing thread…Any help will be appreciated.

    Shane’s Stock Answer #5:

To get music into FCP, it needs to be an AIFF file at 48khz, 16 bit stereo. So if you want a song from a CD, you go into the iTunes Preferences and set this up under the IMPORTING tab:

File > preferences > importing > import using – AIFF encoder > Setting – Custom
    Sample Rate – 48.000 kHz
    Sample size – 16 bit
    Channels – Stereo

If you have an mp3 that you want to use, then you can convert it thru iTunes as well.

If the piece of music you want to use is something you purchased thru iTunes, I’m afraid I can’t help you there. There are copywrite issues that prevent files from being converted into the format that FCP can recognize.

You could also open the desired track with QuickTime and export the file as a 48k aiff file.

I have found that if I don’t copy the file from the CD to my hard disk and them import that file (from the HD) I get the result you discussed. Maybe there’s another way, but that’s how I’ve been doing it.
