I am a professional editor who just switched from Discreet Edit 6.0 to FCP 5 (I also edited on Avids a lot). Which means I know editing systems in general but I am not an Apple and/or a FCP 5 person…

I am currently digitizing my first project and so far I am not particularly thrilled:

The project is Mini DV NTSC.

    Computer is a Dual G5 2.5
    2.5 GB Ram
    ATI RADEON 9600 XT
    Lacie Firewire 800 1TB, Raid 0

    1) Is there a way that I can see timcode and audio levels while digitizing ?
The capture window seems to shut that down which is annoying as hell.

    2) My capture window likes to freeze at time – the only thing I can do is force quit FCP and reimport the files. That happens quite regularly.

    3) Whenever I change the codec to Offline RT or back to DV and hit capture it does not work – a pop up window says “general error 530”.
I have to close the capture window and reopen it, then it works…

    4) While capturing Offline RT the playback in the capture window likes to freeze at times – while capturing fine in the background – any solutions to that ?

    5) Is there a way to tell FCP to stop automatically updating the clip name while capturing ?

    Any ideas or suggestions ?

    Thanks guys

    Cheerioh

You will indeed miss edit*s great capture module when working with FCP. I’m afraid FCP will never reach edit*s level of functionality, flexibility and level of user customization! Another feature you will sorely miss is the timeline cursor doesn’t scroll/follow along as you are playing back a timeline sequence, it just disappears off the screen until you stop playback! The lack of audio level feedback while digitizing has always been a major drawback (and major PItheA) of digitizing in FCP. The titling apps are also much weaker in FCP than the Inscriber module included with edit*. There are many areas where FCP shines, but these are a few areas where it definitely needs some major help!

Ouch – the thing with the timeline sounds dreadful before I even suffer from it…

One thing I don’t miss for one second about edit* is the six second preroll on capturing that out matrox digisuite LE had…

Fortunately I was using the Targa 2K card with Madras. I had no latency issues and firewire in to boot! also no latency with the T3K card and 6.5! May they both RIP!!
