FCP 5 Apple Certification Test
Posted by Mwhatley on July 19, 2005 at 2:58 amHi all, has anyone taken the FCP 5 certification test? I’m considering taking it next month after I study enough, but am wondering what is important to study. What kind of questions are on the exam? Has apple even released a new version of the test that inlcudes new aspects in 5 from 4? Most importantly, how hard is it????
Thanks for any input!

In most cases NO.
But it does matter if you intend on teaching.
You need to know more than just what a book instructs as practical hands on FCP editing knowledge is required.

July 19, 2005 at 5:05 pmYou know, I’ve heard that argument a million times, and it just doesnt make sense to me. I think the certification program is an essential asset to any editor. Its one thing that a potential employer can see that tells him/her that I have a general understanding of a program BEFORE they even look at a demo reel.
This post wasnt about getting your personal feelings about the test, it was an objective question about what is necessary to study, and what is on the exam. Thanks.

July 20, 2005 at 4:59 pmI just got around to finally taking it (it’s now a requirement before taking the Certified Trainer program). I had been approved for the Certifed Trainer program some time ago, but they instituted this change before I got around to taking the classes.
I agree with the comments from the others. It’s actually a well designed exam… there are usually more than one answer that sounds right, but obviously only one right one. If you’re new to FCP you could easily end up missing a lot of questions. Even though you can miss 15 questions and still pass, I think winging it will not work… and just having the book handy won’t do it either. I got a 99%, but I’ve been teaching FCP for 4 years.
As for the comment about teaching… if you’re doing that, the end user certification isn’t going to make a difference… the only thing that will set you apart is the “Certified Trainer” designation… and I know a lot of very knowledgeable people who didn’t bother getting that.
Personally, I’m glad they made the end user exam a pre-req for the Certified Trainer course… there were way to many people being less than truthful about their experience level and getting into the Trainer course. Many of those would have been culled when they failed the end user exam and been kept out of the program…
