FCP 5 and Panasonic Varicam
Posted by Fredericknz on June 17, 2005 at 10:15 amWe are about to embark on a project that is being shot on Panasonic Varicam and we are going to finish on Quantel eQ, but we want to offline on FCP5 using the Panasonic 1200 Varicam Firewire deck. We have been told that FCP5 will handle it and give us a sensible edl. Is this correct or are we opening up a can of the proverbial.
Thanks in advance

June 17, 2005 at 10:27 amThe 1200 runs also on FCP4.5. So FCP5 should handle it without problems.

June 17, 2005 at 10:37 amI own the 1200A and it works perfectly with FCP 4.5 and is working well with FCP 5 in some testing. In fact, we’re considering moving a broadcast series over to FCP 5 next week which is shot on the Varicam.
As far as exporting an EDL, I understand the CMX 3600 setting is the best. BUT you will need to export a separate EDL for every track of video.
Keep in mind that EDL’s are notorious for having issues so one good thing is to have a timecode print of your offline in case there are any tapes that recapture incorrectly. This way you can refer back to the offline to get the correct shot.
Why not finish on an FCP system? I’m cutting a broadcast series with my FCP / Kona 2 system in HD.

June 17, 2005 at 11:48 amAs a long time linear finishing editor, I know exactly what offline editors can do to EDL’s!
Thanks for your prompt replies, I am just finishing a late night session in the edit suite and while my dubs were going down I posted, not expecting anything til tomorrow, awesome guys!
I love my eQ and mainly because of the resolution independence and the fact that we can upload the varicam directly into eQ is why we are going with the Quantel, I really love the colour grading as well. Thanks again

June 17, 2005 at 12:16 pmCheck with your Quantel eQ house I believe that it now supports XML. Be sure and do a test.

June 18, 2005 at 10:22 amRight, FCP XML in Quantel products support was announced quite a while ago so it is probably there by now. Could be a paid option though.
