FCP 5 and Blackmagic Freezing Video on Monitor
I am running a G5 with Final Cut Studio 5. I have been experiencing a problem that even after a sequence has been rendered the video playing on the video monitor will freeze or stutter. The video playing in my canvas will continue playing so I assume the problem is with my BlackMagic card. It doesn’t even occur at edit or effect points. However, if I render the whole sequence and bring the rendered quicktime into a new sequence it will play without any problems. Does anyone have any ideas that may help.

Does this also happen if you use Blackmagic Deck Control or is it only in FCP?
Can you please provide the versions of software you are using for FCP, Mac OS X, QuickTime and DeckLink drivers?
What are you using for disk storage and what speed does Blackmagic Disk Speed Test report for your disk array.
Finally, which Blackmagic easy setup are you using in FCP?

This happens when just previewing the my sequence. Not when importing from tape.

Firstly, we recommend the use of Mac OS X 10.4 with Final Cut Pro HD 5.0 and we specifically advise against using Mac OS X 10.3.9. Having said that, I see you are using the Kona SD and I’ve previously received a few reports of problems playing back 10-bit material with Final Cut Pro 5.0 using the Kona SD whereas this problem did not occur with Final Cut Pro HD 4.5. Given past reports and some of our own tests, I believe this problem is more likely related to QuickTime 7 than FCP itself although I’m not sure. You’re using Panther so that eliminates Tiger as a possible factor in the problem. Accordingly we’ll run some more tests and see if we can work out what is going wrong. Different Kona SD cards have different firmware versions and I suspect ours are more up to date that some and that might make it more difficult for us to replicate the problem. However we’ll give it a try and let you know how we go.

Thank you, I’ll let you know what I find out with continued testing. Also I’ll see what we can do about a Tiger upgrade.

Would using 8 bit renders help the problem at all?

Hi,
While Tiger would be preferable, it won’t fix this problem. However Tiger is a better system for running FCP5.

Hi,
Based upon other reports, that will very likely help but it is possible you would still experience a problem. I’ve received about 4 reports of this and 2 or 3 of the reports indicated that 8-bit still worked OK.

Luke, it doesn’t happen often at all, but if there were to be clients in the room it would be very embarassing. I couldn’t tell you how to recreate it, but again it has happened at least 3 or 4 times in the past week.

Also, our BM card is probably 2 or 3 years old, does this mean that it isn’t compatible with RT extreme and dynamic playback? Could this be part of our issue? In the RT settings on the timeline, Same as Playback is really our only option so it seems that dynamic RT or unlimited RT are not available. Is this true of your older cards working with FCP 5?
