  • FCP 4.5HD Audio Aligning Issue – PLEASE HELP!!

Posted by Cary King on October 24, 2005 at 10:26 pm

I will be detailed as possible as to hopefully find a solution to this extremely frustrating issue.

    System:
    OSX 10.3.9
    FCP 4.5 HD
    Compressor 1.2.1
    QuickTime Various version (7.0.3 – 6.5.2)
Video imported as 16:9 from Sony VX2000

I filmed a wedding. Imported all the footage into one FCP session. I edited everything and exported using Compressor. Every thing exported fine EXCEPT one section. Section is about 25 minutes long has a music file at the front that was recorded at 16 bit 44.1 (session is at 48k – which may be a problem – but it plays just fine in session) – has a LiveType file in front and then other than that just audio that was recorded off the camera mic a few transisions and then fade out. Simple file actually. When I play it in FCP the audio sync’s up all the way through the entire section with out issues. At first when I exported it using Compressor the audio would start about 6 seconds after it was suppose to. Now mind you ALL the other files exported without error! I tried exporting it about 4 times still the same result. I tried to export it as a QuickTime file but I had problems and then when I did get it to work it looked crappy – some dropped frames and when panning it was jittery. Audio was in sync though.

So into work around mode: I opened a new session imported the video of just that section that I needed and basically recreating what I had already done. I exported still the same problem. So I took the FCP files and went to another Mac same OS new install of FCP and Compressor updated and Disc Utility and Mac Warrior before doing anything QuickTIme here was 7.0.3 also…export now the audio starts out ok but slowly over the entire piece it grows late. Crap! So I go to another laptop same OS new install ect except QuickTime 6.5.2 export same thing starts fine slowing grows late – CRAP!

I have put about 25 to 30 hours into this and I am about feed up. I don’t understand why all the other files would export fine and this one won’t – that is the biggest thing I don’t understand. I had 16 bit 44.1 audio in some of those too and they are fine so I can’t imagine that be the issue. Settings/Preferences didn’t change in the first master session.

I really need to get this thing done – already 3 weeks late to client and only this one little section is the hold up. Any input will be appreciated. BTW, I have some working knowledge but please if you are giving suggestions make sure a novice can understand them – that would help me out a lot.

    Thanks in advance.

Why not convert the 44.1 kHz audio to 48 kHz first, then use the new 48 kHz file in FCP?

I use iTunes to resample CD and mp3 audio.

QT PRO does work… but iTunes seems to be faster, after the initial set-up presets:
    iTunes > Preferences > Importing > AIFF> Custom > 48.000 kHz, 16 bit, Stereo >OK

Once these are set, you won’t have to set them again.

Put a CD in the Mac (or use a imported audio file that’s already on the HD), open it up in iTunes, click once on the track you need, and choose:
Advanced > Convert Selection to AIFF.

Works VERY fast and stores new 48 kHz file in the iTunes library. You can just “drag and drop” this new file (.aif) onto your open Browser.

I know some use FCP directly to re-sample their CD audio to 48 kHz, but I find the iTunes approach a good one that works well for me.

I appreciate your reply to my post. I suppose I need to ask – do you feel this could be an issue? The reason why I ask this is because as I mentioned there were other files converted with Compressor that were fine that had 16 bit 44.1 audio in the session. It just doesn’t make sense.

I do audio as my main business so I will try this and at least know if this is it.

Thanks. Any other folks that would like to input please do I can’t imagine that this will be the solution.

have you tried deleting all audio render files? You can do it by going to the Tools menu, in Render manager. You then check every audio render from your project and delete them.

Try to export again. If it still fails, try to export an aiff using “Stereo mix” instead of “channel grouped”.

If that still doesn’t work and you must deliver, you’ll have to jover… disable the probelmatic track, export the quicktime with audio, create a new sequence, re-import your exported quikctime to it, add your problematic track and export again. This is really dirty, but we all do dirty things like this when we must deliver… a bit like in hollywood action movies where the hero must kill to save the nation.

[Cary King] “do you feel this could be an issue?”

When you convert the audio in an outside app, it creates a new file.

Its very likely that the 44.1 version of this file is at fault for whatever reason).
A new “outside-converted” 48 kHz file will eliminate any connection in FCP to the original file.

If the problem is NOT the 44.1 file (it still does not play properly even with the new 48 kHz file), then we will know, at that point, we need to look elsewhere (“bad” video import?).
