I hope someone can help me here. I took delivery of my new Sony HC1 yesterday and I’ve been trying a few simple tests just to get the feel of it. My problem is that I’m still using FCP 4.5HD. I will upgrade soon, but for the moment I’m just trying to get a few simple clips into FCP with the most complicated thing being a cross-dissolve between clips.

My system is 1.5Ghz PowerBook, 1Gb ram, big external FW800 drive, Cardbus FW400 port, Quicktime 7.0.4, OSX 10.4.5. I purchased HDVxDV to capture clips, because I was unable to use FCP’s Log & Capture, and followed the instructions to convert to a QT format using the Apple Intermediate Codec. I have no problem placing the clips on the timeline … they don’t need rendering. A cross-dissolve works fine at first with rendering. But when I subsequently play the timeline, the dissolve doesn’t work. On the canvas, the image freezes at the last frame of the outgoing clip, but the sound from the incoming clip continues to play. What’s going on here? I’ve stepped through the dissolve, frame-by-frame, and it appears to be corrupted on subsequent plays, with only half the frame being visible width-wise. I just can’t work this out at all.

Also, is there a way I can print to video back to my HC1?

I can’t comment on the first part, but as for playing back HDV thru your camera in real time…you can’t. It doesn’ work like DV. With HDV you need an HD capture card and HD monitor (or card that can downconvert).

Many thanks for replying Shane. I managed to solve the problem by creating a custom AIC sequence with 1440×1080 as the size rather than 1920×1080, and making the clip anamorphic. The new setting now outputs fine at 1920×1080 and all the renders are working OK. I use my 26in HD TV as a second display driven by my DVI port on the Powerbook and I get a fantastic display through Digital Cinema Desktop Preview. Once again many thanks … I think I’ve cracked it now.
