  • FCP 4.5 Project Won’t Open in 6.

Posted by Chris Babbitt on December 31, 2008 at 5:56 pm

A client brought me several projects, all stored on separate drives. All projects were created in FCP 4.5 and are fairly complex with After Effects, lots of graphics, etc. A couple of them opened fine on my machine with FCP 6, but two of them crashed midway through the loading process. He says that the same thing has happened on other machines running later versions of FCP. My guess is that there is a file, maybe an old third party filter or something, that is not compatible with the Intel processors, the recent OS or recent version of Quicktime, which is hanging up the process. Is there a way to tell what might be causing the FCP project to crash? My client insists that the project opens in 4.5, but cannot find anyone who still uses it.

Are you running Leopard or Tiger?

I have heard reports of crashes or endless spinning
wheel syndrome when opening older fcp projects in 6.x (it was consistently occuring with 6.03)
    if still running Tiger.

Yep, still running Tiger, however, I’m running Leopard on my MacBook Pro. I’ll try that.
