I have a project in which I will be using footage captured in Premier 6.5 but will be editing on my home system that is running FCP 4.5. The files are .avi’s captured using the Microsoft DV-NTSC codec within Premier. I have never edited a sequence in FCP using .avi’s. I have always, of course, worked with Quicktimes.

    Now the question….
The FCP literature that shipped with the software when I bought it says that it can import .avi’s just fine. And, on my system, the RT Extreme engine runs great using DV-NTSC. Is there a distinct difference, or problem rather, that I will experience since it is technically the “Microsoft DV-NTSC” rather than the “DV-NTSC” that FCP on my Mac will be using. Man I hope not.

2nd question… Since the footage is captured on a PC running Premier 6.5, should I consider using a different codec such as photo-jpeg,sorenson, etc? Thanks for the help folks. -J

The topic of handling AVIs in FCP comes up often so you can search the forum for tons of information. The problem will be the codec, not the AVI wrapper itself. Some work, some don’t. Flip4Mac offers a WMV playback module for Quicktime for about $100.

I hope you’ll post your results for the benefit of those who ask about AVI next week.

Yes, you will save yourself a bunch of trouble/hassle if you simply export to a known, directly-supported QT codec. You could just print to DV tape from the Premiere machine and reingest at the FCP machine.

No I can’t print to tape. I don’t have a deck. I am dragging everything onto an external Firewire Drive.

Bummer. This project might not be any fun at all.
Then make sure your Firewire drive is properly formatted to hook up to the Macintosh later. I don’t think you can use the FAT32 feature available in Windows.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
