FCP 2.1 project…to FCP 4.5?
Hello all,
I have taken over a project that another editor captured and did rough cuts on FCP 2.1. I have FCP 4.5.
When I open it everything is offline. Will I be able to reconnect media? Is it cross compatible?
I checked some of the archives but didn’t find anything on compatibility.
It’s hours and hours of footage the client gave me on one hard drive.
I have FCP 3, I could re-install it if the above won’t work, but would rather not if there is a workaround.Thank you!

A while back I transfered a bunch of projects originally edited in FCP 1.2.5 over to FCP 4.5 without issue. I suspect that your media files are offline because they were made offline in the original project, and the project file you opened in FCP 4.5 would reflect those same settings. It also may be a case of FCP knowing that the project file is on a different computer and it’s asking you to reconnect the source clips manually. It should be a simple task of telling FCP you want to now reconnect the media files and it will help you navigate to the clips on the hard drive the client gave you. Once you’ve successfully connected one of the source clips FCP may tell you it’s “found more media that are still offline” and will offer to reconnect the remaining clips for you. This will save you a ton of work.
Once you’re up and running with your reconnected clips do a “save as” so you don’t overwrite the original project file. This way you can always go back to the original file if things don’t quite go according to plan.

Does that editor still edit on a Quadra 650, 700, 810, 840? Maybe he is really uptown with a Macintosh 9600.

I have no idea what he cut on, that’s the problem. I don’t even know how long ago this project was taken on. I’m actually researching this for a co-worker, so I don’t have all the answers unfortunately. I’m going to try for him but I have a feeling I’m going to have to reload FCP 3 and see if that works. I still have FCP 3 on my G4 at home, might just bring it there first instead of messing with the ones at work.
Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks Don! I will attempt. I am actually writing this post for a co-worker, so I haven’t actually got my hands on it yet, but trying to help him out on this project he’s been dreading to do!
