  • FCP 1080i60 Real-Time Playback/Edit Question

Posted by Mike Quinn, jr. on June 12, 2009 at 3:24 pm

    Hello.

My question is about FCP’s capability to edit/playback 1080i60 footage in real-time from the timeline.

I am working with 1080 footage of the following flavors.
    – 1920 x 1080 Apple ProRes 422 at 29.97
    – 1280 x 1080 DVCPro HD 1080i60 at 29.97

When I open up this footage (either flavor) within the Viewer and hit play, I have no problem watching it on my external monitor.

However, when I drag the same footage to the timeline, FCP tells me it must be rendered (everything has the red bar and yes, I have doubled checked my sequence settings to make sure they match. And, I also tried letting FCP change the sequence settings itself). I mean, FCP just played the footage in real-time from the Viewer, so what gives? We’re talking one video layer with straight cuts.

Now, if I set my Playback Control to “Unlimited” and Video Quality to “Medium” it will playback/edit in real-time from the timeline. However, I typically try to leave it set at “Safe” and “High”.

Is it possible to edit this footage in real-time from the timeline with out reducing my RT?

In the past, I have worked with HDCAM footage captured to 1080psf 23.98 DVCPro HD and have had no problem monitoring or editing the footage in real-time from the FCP timeline. Even when Playback Control was set to “Safe” and “High”.

Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

This is what gets me. They match EXACTLY? And still require a render? Odd.

Well, you have fast enough drives…you have a fast mac…this is a puzzler. BUT, when things are odd I trash preferences. Try that and see what happens. You never know.

Are you mixing the two codecs in the one sequence?

[Michael Gissing] “Are you mixing the two codecs in the one sequence?”

No. I just wanted to give examples to show that it wasn’t a codec specific problem.

I am going to try trashing my preferences.

Is FCP capable of editing 1080i 29.97 footage in real-time from the timeline with RT set to “Safe” and “High”?

Set it to High and Unlimited.

For me the issue is not the RT capability of FC, but WHY do you need to render the sequence.
I would be more concern for the red line than for the speed.

Your system is plenty fast for multiple streams of prores or dvcpro hd.

There’s no reason for your clips to be rendered if your sequences exactly match your clips.

Followed Rich Harrington’s Final Cut tutorial on trashing preferences (https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/1032349) and everything seems to be working now! Thanks to Shane Ross for pointing me in the right direction and to everyone else for your valuable input.

The 1080 footage I was working with had been transcoded from files shot on the 5D Mark II and I thought that might have potentially been the issue.

Not the case, I am now able to playback/edit 1080i 29.97 footage from the FCP timeline in real-time, even with Playback Control set to “Safe” and “High”.

    Thanks again!

Additional Note: After further investigation, my red render bar issue may have been caused by having my Video Scopes Playback turned on. Either way mystery solved.

Think I might look into a Blackmagic UltraScope. But that post is for another forum…
