FCP: 1080/25p timeline for Canon 1080/25p and Panasonic 1080/50p material?
Hi out there.
I have a problem as I have to film with two different cameras tomorrow. And afterwards I edit the images in one single timeline. I have no other option than these two cameras:
One is the Canon 7D
The other one the Panasonic HDC-SD909Canon 7D only records 1080/25p
The Panasonic HDC-SD909 records always interlaced, BUT: one can additionally record 1080 at 50fps. There is NO option of recording 1080/25p.
I will now film with Canon at 1080/25p and Panasonic with 1080/50p.
My possible editing suites are Final Cut 7, Final Cut X and Adobe Premiere (at the university).
My Plan:
– to film both cameras progressive (25p and 50p) and to export the Canon7D material to Prores 1080/50p or 25p. Then I can simply open a 1080/50p or 1080/25p timeline in Final Cut.My questions:
– It makes sense, as I only have to double the images … I will not loose anything, right? Is it the best workflow?– Or should I record interlaced? But the 7D does not record interlaced … I guess that makes no sense at all, even if I could re-compress it to 1080i, as I will only loose quality, right?

One thing FCP does badly with is mixed frame rates. I would shoot both at 25 fps. The obsession with progressive is not healthy. Interlaced can be nicely deinterlaced with various tools.
A frame doubled 7D will look strange in a 50p timeline. The image difference will be the same as comparing 25p and 50i so you gain nothing but pain. So shoot 25 with both cameras and deinterlace the Panasonic footage.

For the Panasonic; It is 1080/50p; this the Full HD size.
After Reading These comments and other threads, I opt for recording with the canon at 1080/25p and with the Panasonic at 1080/50p. Afterwards I export both formats into Prores HQ at 1080/25p and hope that the Panasonic will blend the images nicely together.
Any tips? I would do it with compressor and import it into a 1080/25p timeline inside FCP. Right?Visual and Media Anthropologist

As you can not record p25 on the PANA, record p50.
Convert both footage to Prores and edit on a p25 sequence.

Okay, problems solved. I have recorded in 1080p50 with th Panasonic and with 1080p25 with the Canon7D.
Then I converted it to a ProRes Format with 1080p25 and both cameras look very nice on a Final Cut timeline. The look is quite similar, even the colours match more or less.
