FC Studio freezes at serial number
Recently got a new iMac (10.9.3) and migrated data from my 2009 MBP17 (also 10.9.3). FCP had been working without a hitch on the MBP.
Attempt to launch brought option to enter serial#, which I did… app hung with twirling clown pizza. Repeat, same result. Fix permissions, zap PRAM, etc… same result.
Closest useful link I’ve found was a fellow posting here with similar problem, followed by him posting “problem solved” and disappearing leaving no clue of how he solved it.
Ideas?

Migrating FCP won’t work. When you install FCP, it isn’t only the app that gets installed, but many many subfiles are installed throughout the operating system in system libraries. Migrating doesn’t grab those files, thus FCP won’t work properly. You need to install FCP from the original installer DVDs.

Thanks Shane, I noticed it didn’t work and then completely uninstalled it… that was just the background.
The problem I’m having appears when attempting to re-install from the DVD’s. Installer gets to the Serial# screen, I put in the serial#, then WHEEEEEE!!!! whirling technicolor cow flop. I can’t reinstall because Installer consistently fails at that point.

You need to hack the install because the installer for FCP 7 has code in it saying that it’s a PowerPC installer…needing a non-intel chip or emulation software to install it. Older OS versions had Rosetta installed…thus were able to install FCP 7. Mavericks does not.

Are you trying to install FCP6 or 7?
I’ve just done a ‘clean’ USB install of Mavericks on a Mac Pro and then an install of an FCP7 update from disks with no problems, it all installed and works fine. If you’re trying to load FCP6 to then update to FCP 7 you only need to install the FCP 7 update and then it’ll ask for the full version 6 serial.Web – https://www.foxvideo.co.uk

FCP7… So yeah, fishy, I doubt it’s a Rosetta issue. Again, the installer begins to run then freezes when I enter the serial number.
Apple support was decidedly unsupportive and tried to upsell FCPX, which I don’t need or want because I’ve already primarily transitioned to Premiere. It would however be swell to use my 5 year old software that some clients still pay me to use.

I’d suggest a clean install of Mavericks on the iMac, then install FCP7 then copy any data from the MBP to the iMac.

That’s what I wound up doing and that’s what worked. Recut an old FCP project without a hitch. Even on that old software there’s a marked zip increase from the 3.06 C2D MBP to the 3.5i7 with 4GB VRAM. Even though it’s not my primary editing software any more, it’s dang handy to still have it on my main station.
