  • FC Composition Size Limit?

Posted by Chris Stegner on July 8, 2008 at 9:12 pm

I am doing a video that will be shown on 3 HD projectors, and the people designing the projector system has told me to make the video 5760 x 960. Basically 3 HD compositions lined up next to each other. I have done a test in After Effects that was fine (rendered at 1/3 resolution). Then I wanted to try another test in FC. Unless I’m missing something, FC will not allow me to make a comp this large. The vendor that will install and get all this up and running says they’ll take my final full resolution file and “divide” it in the proper thirds to make it work with the projection system. They’re being kind of hush, hush on exactly what that means, but that’s their responsibility and after review of their credentials I’m confident they can do it.

That’s a lot to say just to get to my question… but, is there a way around the apparent limit in FC? Or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think they are going to require one video in the frame size mentioned, not three videos divided. I have not tried a comp that size, but FCP is supposed to be resolution independent.

Did you go into Sequence Presets and just try to create a completely custom size with no constraints? I’m not in front of my system right now.

If not, you’ll have to simply prep the entire thing in After Effects.

[Chris Stegner] “the people designing the projector system has told me to make the video 5760 x 960.”

    Nope

Stick to AE then – final cut has a 4000 pixel max limit.

    Is this Dataton’s watchout system?

If it is I’ve got quite a few tips for you, that will save you a lot of hairs.

The easiest way I have found to do projects like these is to rough cut your 3 up sequence in a 1920×1080 timeline. What I like to do is make a big purple solid in Photoshop at the size of your final comp (in your case it’s 5750×960, are you sure it’s 960 & not 1080?). I then bring that solid into FCP and put it scaled into a 1920×1080 comp and I always leave it at the bottom v1 track. This will then show you the aspect ratio of your final screen comp and you need to guide the rest of your edit through that aspect ratio.

I then scale/crop all of my footage into that aspect ratio and edit the footage accordingly (sometimes you need to split the screen in 3 or not, it depends on what you’re doing). At the end of that, I autoduck the comp to After Effects and do a final conform at the final comp size which usually involves scaling the footage back up to the final comp size and making sure everything looks tight and crisp. I then render to whatever the staging company is asking for and send it off.

Hopefully you get to go see the final product at the show. If you aren’t used to working on movies, this is the biggest you will ever see your work.
