  • Favorite Screen Capture software to use with FCP?

Posted by Naiche Lujan on October 5, 2009 at 6:01 pm

More and more I’m having the desire to use screen captures, but as I’m a relative newbie to FC, I’m not sure what works best with it. I’d really appreciate anyone posting what they use or like, and WHY.

    Thanks

I would not call it my favorite but you are limited on what screen grab software works on a mac. I use Snapz Pro because it show all of the mouse symbol changes which some software programs don’t. It works good in Motion and I like that. It has some bugs but what are you going to do.

Thanks guys. They both seem cool, but with different features.

I presume they both use h264 to compress?

Snapz Pro lets you choose your codec. You can do a 15 day free trial.

There is also iShowU, which is only $20. All of these products have the ability to use any codec installed on your Mac. If you’re going to edit the material at all you certainly don’t want to capture using h.264, but rather to an editing codec, such as ProRes, then export as h.264 if that’s your final choice for distribution.

    David,
iShowU was the first screen capture software I ever used back when it was free. I really liked the program. Have they made it so it shows the mouse arrow change yet? Back in the days you would not see the arrow change into the hand symbol on the web. Or if you did something like select and hover your mouse over a clip in FCP and hold down the option key, which changes the mouse arrow to a plus symbol type thing. That was the reason I switched to Snapz Pro. If that has been fixed I would like to look at iShowU again.

Oh, I see. That’s great that they let you use any codec you have. Choices are good. ProRes it is!

    Thanks guys

Honestly, I haven’t used it in so darned long that I can’t answer Stephen. But, I’ll look into it later, as I have to create a tutorial soon. That’s a good point you make BTW.

    Stephen,

I forgot to tell you, I got a message from Eric at Shiny White Box, who said that both versions of iShowU do exactly what you asked about, i.e. changing the cursor to the various tool shapes etc. So, there you go…
