The best one all around is Film Effects by Graeme Nattress.

I call it the “swiss army knife” of plug-ins. Works in both FCP and After Effects.

March 17, 2006 at 2:47 pmi think the biggest way to make your video look like film, is to make sure when it is shot, to make sure you get a short depth of field, and that of course, your subject is in focus, and background drops off a lot. then when you add your film effect, it’ll look more like film….of course at this part of post, you can’t aways do it.
here is a link to a short film i helped do post on,

shot on a canon xl1s, no film effects, just smart shooting and color correction in discreet combustion. turned a lot of heads here in boston!

March 17, 2006 at 3:40 pmI use Magic Bullet and have fooled several people into thinking it was shot on 16mm. Not even shot in 24p. I think the film look has more to do with depth of field, good quality camera movements, and good coloration filters. But what do I know, I’ve never worked with film.

March 17, 2006 at 4:14 pmI have to repeat one of my all time favourite quotes from a forum:-
“If you want stuff to really look like film, shoot film!”
Other than that everywhere I edit on FCP ends up installing Graeme’s filters
and no I’m not on a commission!Peter

March 17, 2006 at 5:39 pmyah, the natress filters have always piqued my interest,
im a big fan of shooting xl2 24p video with the pstechnic mini35mm adapter and real 35mm zeiss superspeed lenses or cook s4 lenses.
discreet combustion also let’s you choose film stocks to add to your video, so you can say, the exact type of film stock you want, so the grains match, etc
