Fastest way of navigating FCP timeline

go into your osX system prefs,, click on Keyboard and Mouse, select the mouse tab, and make sure it says “Vertical and Horizontal” beside Scrolling Options.. sounds like you may only have vertical selected.

I have done that before. Maybe we misunderstood or I misunderstood. That does not help me having a zoom in and out on the FCP timeline. I can easily drag the cursor on the timeline instead of using the mouse H scroll on the ball. Thanks for the info anyways.

shift+scroll wheel will scroll horizontally. This is a system wide shortcut.

You can also try option and control + scroll. Maybe i’m dreaming, but I have a feeling that it will zoom the timeline.

And btw, to zoom in the timeline, I prefer to use option + and option – since this shortcut only zoom the timeline and not the viewers by accident.

One thing I wished is that FCP would always zoom around the timeline cursor, not around the selected clips. I don’t know a single person who prefer to zoom around clips…

For the timeline I use a combination of keyboard and mouse. I use the ‘a’ Selection tool and the ‘z’ Zoom tool. With the Zoom tool, using my four button Wacom mouse, I can zoom in and out, click and drag to zoom into an area, and by just holding down the ‘command’ (aka apple key), it changes to the hand tool for moving the timeline. So my left hand is always in the shift, a, z, control, option, command, space area; right hand using the mouse. I also use ‘shift-z’ to zoom to entire timeline. (just found out today that just holding down the z key for a second does the same as shift-z.)

Using the ‘z’ key is much more convenient than cmd+or- because my hand doesn’t have to leave the mouse and my muscle memory can find it automatically. Of course if you don’t have a four button mouse, you can still use your modifier keys (cmd, opt, ctrl)

I swapped the keyboard cuts for timecode entry with zoom in out, because i am zooming in and out a lot more than timcode entry

now i just press + or – to zoom in and out, and press command + and command – to enter tc. no biggie
