Hi. I’m making a fake sneakers ad for a play and I’m learning after effects in the process. At this point I need to create a traveling night shot down a street that should look something like the background for this image but in motion (without the lens flare):

Basically my question is how to achieve the streaking of the lights as the camera speeds forward. If i were to go out and shoot a street with lots of lights from a car and then speed it up, how would i get the lights on the sides to do what they’re doing in the picture? Would it be possible for me to create a ten second shot like that in AE without shooting anything? The idea is that the shot is the point of view of someone running REALLY fast.

    Any help will be appreciated.

I’m pretty sure I understand what you’re looking for. You probably would get better results from an actual camera shot, because you can get the light streaks by adjusting the frame rate or by easily adding a blur effect. You could also stitch together some photos taken from varying distances down the street, if you have a high enough res still camera.
Check out Kramer’s HDR 32bpc tutorial https://library.creativecow.net/articles/kramer_andrew/hdr.php. It might help with getting those really hot light streaks you’re looking for.

I saw the Andrew Kramer’s tutorial on HDR. I think I’m going to follow your advice, Nathan, on the still images and work on them in 32 bit. thanks for your response. I’m going to try it out.
