February 4, 2006 at 2:25 pmNormal. The newer firmware download V5.4 seems to quiet it down though. But wait for a newer release next week sometime.

February 4, 2006 at 2:33 pmHi,
If you are running 5.2.3, indeed you can experience the fan running at ‘full speed’.
Please wait for the 5.4 version, which probably will be there coming monday. This version brings dynamic control of fan speed, based on continuous readout of chip temperature. The result will be a dramatic slowing down of the fan speed. Under normal surrounding conditions you will hardly hear the fan running.Regards,

February 4, 2006 at 5:44 pmThanks Gene and Theo,
Dynamic fan control sounds good to me.
I accidentally installed the “old” 5.4 release.

February 4, 2006 at 6:46 pmThank God! That fan is loud right now.
Also, I had asked about the cables and the answer was no. This is as long as they can be right now (this came via Blackmagic support in the USA).

February 4, 2006 at 7:35 pmWhat is the cable length? I’ve always had to run extensions for the breakout cable on my DL Pro. Going to get a new G5 + DL extreme as soon as there’s a good SATAII RAID PCIe card for the Mac, and I want to be sure the cable can go from the back of my computer to my rack.

February 5, 2006 at 2:16 amWell thank goodness on the fan speed control news. I’m just installing a brand new G5 Quad/Multibridge Extreme system today. Thankfully, I’ve been able to avoid the buggy 5.4 debacle, but this 100% fan noise is pretty annoying! I think while cooling is necessary it’s generally a much better idea to use larger/slower fans to move the required amount of air then the tiny one this thing has. Slowing it down will help some though.
BTW, going to post separately about this but I can’t get an image on my DVI-connected Sceptre X37 monitor. The spec on this monitor is 1920×1080, so you’d think that rez would certainly be one that is supported, being a very common HD standard. I just can’t get any image at all on it and have played with all the settings.
