has anyone ever made an overlay to fake some sort of lighting pattern on people’s faces (e.g. a brancholoris or cucoloris)?
i just got some really ugly night extreior footage that was pretty flatly lit and needs some contrast
    thanks

Not sure what the problem is. You can make this work any number of different ways including simple composite modes. The hard part is coming up with the animated layer but blending it is easy.

Umm, depends on your need to sell the effect, of course. It get really complicated if you think you need to follow the contours of the faces. Displacement map created from a monochrome version of the footage might work.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Hey nick. There were some plug-ins to do this but it can easily be done without one. Basically find something unique about your FG or BG. For example if you want the effect just on the BG behind a person, then use a keyer to key out someones face. Then use that alpha inverted on a pattern layer which is multiplied over the image. It all depends on the scene, but the point is to use keyers, or levels to create a matte to isolate the area where you want the effect, then use screen/add transfer mode if you want the overlayed pattern to be brighter than the BG (like a light shining through blinds) or use multiply for darker like shadows.
