    I’m trying to create a 3d look to a rotating gear using simple drop shadows and bevel effects whose light angle is set to correspond with a fixed light layer. The problem occurs when the highlights and shadows asscoiated with the bevel effect rotate along with the layer, moving them opposite the light’s position. Does anyone know any tricks to keep the highlights and shadows stationary while the image itself is rotating?

    You seem to be parenting the shadows to the mail moving gear. Don’t do that, just parent the expression. Use the expresion button in the rotation feature. Then you’ll se a parent tool within the rotation options. Attatch/parent it to the rotation value of the main gear and it’ll be done.

    You could probably do it with an expression, countering the layer rotation in the lighting position in the bevel effects settings.

    Or you precompose the rotating layer, moving all it’s attributes to the pre-comp. And then apply the bevel to the comp, not the original layer.

    Rotate using the “distort->transform” filter, then apply a bevel after that.

    you can copy the keyframes or expressions from rotation to the rotation parameter of the effect.
