Fake Zoom and pull focus in After Effects
Hi All,
Sorry if this is more of an expression question I wasn’t sure.
I want to be able to create a fake “filming camera” effect on some footage and/or still.
The effect is the one where a Cameraperson is setting up for a shot they will zoom into the subject, adjust focus and pull out. Want to give some this artificial adjustment to provide some movement to some images. But also want that fake intertia of the camera missing the focus point pulling out a bit and zooming back in..
Hope that makes sense – it’s the camera movement you would normally cut out however you some to use to create movement and pace to show sort of run and gun footage.
But want to create this using After Effects with normally shot footage.. ?
Thanks in advance for any ideas of plugins or tutorials..

If I understand your question correctly, you won’t need any plug-ins.
Use the >Transform >Scale control to fake the zoom-in/out. Obviously, the higher-res the original footage, the more you can zoom in. Use the Position control if you’d like to simulate the camera ‘hunting’ for the focus spot. I’d then use >Blur & Sharpen > Camera Lens Blur to fake the focus effect.
Should be able to set this up in 30-seconds or less. Tweak keyframes as needed.
