Here’s probably a an old chestnut, but from an exotic location,

I’m on a boat some miles off the north coast of Norway, and a collegue of mine has a FCP High Definition system with a problem. He’s just tried to record live pictures straight onto his hard drive, it’s worked fine for him many times before, but on this occaision when he pressed escape to stop recording the dreaded pizza of death started whirring, and after 10 minutes, still hasn’t stopped. If we crash out of this, we’ll be left with a corrupted file. Does anyone know if it’s possible to fix this?

    Thanks,

    Ken.

    Nope. Sorry.

I never attempt to caputure “live” for this reason.

I record it to tape, then store it.

That way all my hard work is SAVED on a timecoded tape.

This is true, but I think he was hoping to avoid the expense of an HD recorder. I suggested he at least find a way of doing an SD backup to tape of some kind – he’s using decklink, but thinks this is not possible while recording. He is taking on board my suggestion that he closes the file every 10 minutes or so to avoid loosing too much material – but this doesn’t help him now. No ideas as to who or what can ressurrect these corrupted files anyone?

    Cheers,

    Ken.

[Ken Pugh] “This is true, but I think he was hoping to avoid the expense of an HD recorder.”

    I’m lost.

What was he “shooting” the LIVE HD images with?

Errr, an HD Camera? We digress. Thanks, anyway,

    All the best,

    Ken.

First I said to record the “live session” to tape to avoid the situation he found himself in.

    Then YOU said…

[Ken Pugh] “This is true, but I think he was hoping to avoid the expense of an HD recorder. “

Then, I asked what he was “shooting with” and YOU said…

[Ken Pugh] “Errr, an HD Camera? We digress. “

Now, does anyone else here see my confusion?

Perhaps you’re assuming it’s an HD camcorder, and he’s using an HD camera without an onboard recorder.

Sorry nobody could help with the original question.

Wait it out. Let it spin and spin and pray it stops. I’m not sure what you’re worried about, exactly, b/c it sounds like nothing is logged anyway, so the only thing you’ll corrupt is the last file that’s being captured, right?

For the sake of all the generations in the future scanning the archive – David’s right, an HD Camera not a Camcorder, hence no tape copy, hence his concern about the corrupted file. It’s not my place here to justify his workflow, and would be a long discussion if I tried, but thanks for the responses. He’s binned the file now and repeated the capture. But it’s not quite as good as last time! Suffice to say as you’re interested its an underwater survey using a remote drone with HD Camera and umbilical link… all ending up in FCP! But that is another story. A corrupted file was our concern. I’m back to watching the fishes,

    Cheers,

    Ken.
