I am a new FCP user and am capturing footage using FCP. Everything was working fine until yesterday when I started to encounter some major problems. The biggest problem is that FCP stops in the middle of capturing a batch and won’t complete the capture.
This was preceeded by a number of other problems– 1. I have some footage with dropped frames, so I set the preferences to ignore dropped frames. 2. FCP is naming some files with an extension (_v_1), and when it does this, Quicktime says that it cannot recognize the file. 3. I understand the movies should have the extension .mov at the end, but none of them do.
I am really frustrated and would appreciate any help.
    Thanks!

Sometimes your capturing will end midflow because it has exceeded the number of minutes allocated to a capture. You can change this by going to FinalCutPro/System Settings under the Scratch Disks Tab and uncheck the limit capture size/min.

I’m not sure if this will help but you can also go to the log and capture dialog box (file/log&capture) and under capture settings select non-controllable device.

    Hope this helps.

When you tell it to ignore the dropped frame warning…it is not warning you when it is dropping frames, but it is still dropping them. And each of those QT files are tied to one clip in FCP…but can’t be opened separately. Everytime a dropped frame occurred, it began a new QT file.

THis is bad. You don’t want to ignore those warnings, you want to not drop frames.

    1) Set a limit on Capture Now. Never have that box unchecked. Set it to 60 min if you want the whole tape.

    2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn’t cooperate with it very well.

If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin’s script to shut it off before you use FCP:

    3) Do not capture to your main system drive.

    4) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn’t, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.

    Trash the FCP preference file:
Home/library/preferences/FCP user data/Final cut Pro Preferences
Or better yet, Google FCP RESCUE and download that. It automatically trashes all teh files that need trashing. I am forgetting 2 files….
