“Failed to intialize audio hardware” error
Posted by Russell Tafarella on December 12, 2008 at 6:50 amHi guys, im getting a “failed to intialize audio hardware” error when I start up media composer. I was using onboard sound but I read some posts on avids site and they said my onboard sound wasn’t compatible. Well i just put in my new x-fi sound card and it’s giving me the same msg. I downloaded the latest drivers for the sound card and still the same thing. Please, Please help! I’m so behind with work.

December 12, 2008 at 10:38 amDo you have a webcam attatched to your computer, or a usb micrphone? If you do then they will normally conflict with your sound card.

December 12, 2008 at 2:13 pmDid you switch soundcards because your onboard wasn’t working, or because you read that it was incompatible with Avid?

December 12, 2008 at 5:40 pmyeah the onboard was giving me the same Failed to initialize error. So I read the avid forums and bought a sound card and it’s still doing it.

December 12, 2008 at 6:10 pmYou may need to go into BIOS to disable the onboard audio. Otherwise it may default to using that, even with your soundcard installed.
I have the Creative SB X-Fi card in my system running Media Composer 3.05 and it works fine. It should work in your system, but again–check that you’ve disabled the onboard sound first.

May 31, 2009 at 4:03 pmHi everyone !
This is my very first post in the forum.
I have a system with the following characteristics:
Intell Core 2 Quad, Q8200@2.33 GHz, 4GB of RAM, 1 TERA HD, running Windows XP, SP2.I have also an onboard Realtec AC97 sound card.
When I tried to run Avid Media Composer 3.0 I get the same error message, i.e “Failed to intialize audio hardware”. The AMC stops at this point and doesn’t open at all.
I have read many posts, and did the folowing:
I have un-installed the Realtec drivers, and installed a new audio card. The new card is a Sound Blaster Creative Audigy.
I was still getting the same problem.
So after reading THIS post (from Mr. Michael Hancock) I went into my BIOS settings and disabled the on-board audio.
Now the AMC starts up without any problems, BUT I don’t have any soud at all !
Can you pleae give me any kind of help? I will really appreciate it!
Thank you

June 1, 2009 at 4:16 pmHi again, just letting you know that I fixed the problem myself.
Basically (and this is embarassing!) I was doing a very basic mistake… I kept plugging the speaker cables into the old soundcard !
It took another person (and a “fresh eye”) to spot the obvious!
Thanx anyway!
