  • Fading a layer from its center to its edges

I want the opacity of a layer to decrease as we get farther from its center so that I can blend it into the layer behind it. The center of the image should be 100% opaque, the edges approaching transparency. I can do this with a still in Photoshop using a layer mask and a radial gradient, but not In After Effects 7. I’ve tried an adjustment layer, but once I apply the ramp effect for some reason it stops acting like an adjustment layer. I’ve approximated it with feathering and CC radial blur, but was hoping there’s a way to have more control. I suspect I’m missing something basic, but it’s got me stumped. (And yes, I may want to animate the effect.)

    Thanks for any tips!

If I am reading you question correctly you should be able to apply a mask to the layer and then feather the mask.

You could then animate/key frame the mask shape.

    Hope that helps.

Even easier (and less combersomb) Use the effect “Linear Wipe” and then give it a large feather, and boom, you’re done.
