I’m a DP but I’m posting here because I’d like some input from any AE ops out there while I’m still in preproduction.

I’ll be shooting a short that involves linking a human face to a wooden doll’s body. We’ll be shooting in B&W on an EX1 with a 35mm adapter.

I’d like to get ideas on how to go about this. Should the face be superimposed on the doll, or vice versa? The doll, which will usually be seated, needs to move slightly — an occasional arm gesture, and a slight movement of the torso to enhance the realism. For such movements, is there any alternative to stop motion? If we do go the stop-motion route, how might that footage be linked to the live-action footage?

Finally, is there anything I can do with the camera and lighting to facilitate the compositing process? In particular I’m concerned about blending the textures of the face to that of the doll.

    Hi there mate.

I have here some tutorial I watched sometime ago that shows a lot about face replacement:

    https://www.tutorialized.com/view/tutorial/Face-replacement-Tutorial-tracking-a-human-face-onto-a-lizard/34140

It might give you an idea about the post prod steps.

I can think a little more tomorrow and come up with some better ideas or experiences but as soon as I read your post this tut came to my mind.

And it envolves a live animal so it must be really harder than your case.

Hope I at least turned the bed lamp on and somebody can open the window for you………..so the light shall come in….

    All the best.

    Cheers.
