F900 project, what’s best / cheapest option to capture/edit on my G5?

David – I wish I had a powerful MacPro but alas I have a 2.3 dual core G5. I’ve yet to run into any RT issues with DVCPRO HD – non raided SATA drives seem to do great for the codec and it seems this project will go dvcpro hd as well… but I’ll keep your statement in mind on their durability.

Thanks so much guys, I’ll prob have a couple middling follow up questions in the days coming as I’ve heard the production is clueless to how to capture the tapes, where to go for online etc. etc. so it sounds like a job I’ll at least be capturing on.

Just for the record, your 2.3ghz machine would benefit even more than a MacPro from the significant added throughput of striped drives… Many FCP freelancers who experience editing on my G5 with four SATA striped drives at raid-0 for the first time are amazed at the “spiffiness” it brings to the entire system. I think you would be amazed at the difference.

I will definitely consider this – so a normal boot drive for the program and project files then raided drives for media only… I do love speed, the Graid just gave me one of the biggest scares I’ve had before in a decade or so.

Yep, that’s it… Use your old G-raid for backup and file transport to other facilities if needed, that’s all I think firewire is good for.

I was at Plastercity Digital’s website the other day and noticed that they have changed the name of their company to Blue Cow Creative. I was quite startled when I saw it. Blue Cow Creative?

I am surprised that the COW hasn’t gone after them. This is so close I can’t believe that Plastercity’s lawyers would recommend a move like this with Creative COW so well known in this industry.
