  • Eye Dropper and Export Frame not being full range

    Hi,

Is there an eye dropper tool i’ve not been able to find, or how can i tell the values of an area of the frame? (aside from guessing via a waveform)?

Secondly i have footage that is showing full range 0-255, so darker blacks (0-16) and super brights (235-255). When i export a frame (OpenEXR/PNG/Whatever) it seems to take the 0 IRE range to the top and expand it to fit 0-255 and truncates the 0-16 original data. (My waveform on the source goes from -6 % to 109%). Is there some way of preserving that on export?

    many thanks
    pau

Sound perfectly normal to me. FCP X’s internal rendering is to ProRes, a Rec 709 format where black=16 and white=235. When you export to an RGB format, like PNG, I presume it’s taking the 16-235 range and expanding it to 0-255, thus clipping and crushing 235-255 and 0-16. Have you tried to see if this changes by setting the render format to ProRes4444?

An awful lot of real world REC709 accommodates extended range, i find it odd that FCP X will show you the range but not let you get it out. This is from original media so there has been no transcoding. I don’t see why an OpenEXR frame (Export Frame) would not include it all! At least a check box option.

Of course if FCP X had an eye dropper i wouldn’t need to export the frame!

I know Mac OS X has the system eye dropper but i presume it’s reading off the LCD data so i don’t know how accurate it is…

    cheers
